Jade is more than just a pretty green gemstone (and an amazing 90’s R&B group). It’s also known for its cosmetic healing powers, dating back to ancient 7th Century China. Recently, jade rollers have resurged among western beauty mavens as a way to achieve more youthful, radiant skin.
I received a jade roller from Mer this holiday season during our favorite things gift exchange. It looks like a little paint roller, and I had to do some research to figure out what the heck it was.
Turns out, this pretty stone roller boasts the ability to:
improve blood circulation and skin tone
improve elasticity of the skin
promote lymphatic drainage
reduce puffiness and wrinkles
reduce dark under eye circles
aid in absorption of facial oils and moisturizers
Reduce headache and destress
How it’s used:
The jade roller (aka, the "Eastern Facelift") is best used in the morning, alongside your favorite facial serum, oil, or moisturizer. After cleansing your face, apply facial product. Start on the side of the nose and roll upwards and outwards towards your ear. It felt good to start under my eyes then slowly move down towards the jaw line. For your neck (now, this goes against everything your esthetician ever told you about moisturizing) you actually want to roll it down your neck. This way, you push the impurities to the center of your body where they can best be processed and expelled.
I used the jade roller for the first time on a clean face first thing in the morning. I noticed:
1. A brighter skin tone, indicating improvement in my blood circulation.
2. Lymphatic drainage- this is what I was most excited about since I have been fighting a lingering cold (in January, in Cincinnati?! shocker). Colds are always the WORST first thing in the morning, and this morning was no different. Using the jade roller immediately helped break up the congestion sitting in my sinuses. Amazing.
3. A reduction of my post-slumber puffiness and a more alert feeling (and this was BEFORE I had coffee). That in itself is a miracle.
Since I just started using it, jury is still out on whether I will experience improved elasticity, a reduction in dark under eye circles, and tightened pores. These seem to be result of long term usage. But after this first experience, I will absolutely start incorporating this into my morning routine. I’m on the search for a good, local facial oil to start using with it- if you know of one, send me your recommendations!
