Right off the bat, Alex and I have something in common-- we both want to wear leggings all day, everyday. I’m kinda (OK, really) jealous she’s made this dream of mine a reality.
Alex has always loved health and she has always loved fashion. She attended Parsons School of Design in NYC for fashion marketing. Upon returning to Cincinnati, she managed Soho Boutique for seven years where she gained extensive experience in fashion buying. Like many of us, she reached a point where she started evaluating her long term career goals. She slowed down, took a look around and within, and then, as she says, “I put it all together.” She saw potential in the quickly emerging Cincinnati wellness scene and decided to combine her two passions by opening Cincinnati's first boutique focused exclusively on activewear. OUTFIT ACTIVE.
At first, she was loosely operating out of her home. Clothing covered her countertops, kitchen table, and floors. When a storefront opened up on Hyde Park Square, she decided to take the leap. She calls that decision terrifying but exciting. Like most things that are right, the closer she got to actually doing it, the better it felt.
OUTFIT ACTIVE opened in July of 2017. The boutique aims to offer fashion forward female activewear that is both flattering and functional for transition from the gym to everyday life. I perused the racks last week while chatting with Alex and found more than a few items I wanted to purchase. The options range from comfortable lounge wear and mantra inspired tanks to super supportive sports bras and spandex tight leggings. There really is a broad selection of price, from more budget friendly items to investment pieces. Alex hit up both NY and Cali this year to stock her shelves, and I was excited to see two of my favorites: Spiritual Gangster and Beyond Yoga.
Alex has a goal of growing community at OUTFIT ACTIVE. Inside the store, she’s created a relaxed atmosphere where you can both lounge and make a latte. She hopes the store will become a place for for women to not only shop, but congregate, learn, and inspire each other to lead healthier lives. Look for community events hosted in the shop in future months.
I asked Alex what 2018 will look like for activewear. She said watch for:
1. The collision of mainstream with luxury fashion (think hooded parkas with silk skirts).
2. Even less division between office and gym wear (THANK YOU).
3. Stretch fabrics in everything (also, thank you).
I walked away from our interview with a new infinity scarf from Beyond Yoga which, I kid you not, is the softest thing ever. I also got Sweat Towels by Sweat Cosmetics for us to test out after a future cycling or HIIT class. We’ll report back soon on what we think of them.
OUTFIT ACTIVE online store is coming in 2018. In the meantime check them out on: Instagram and Facebook.
