Sayonara Wine Stains: Hello Charcoal Toothpaste

December 6, 2017

It’s definitely messy. It’s a little scary. I’m still concerned about whether or not it will stain my white sinks long-term. But gosh darnit, it seems to actually WORK. In case you haven’t heard about the newest craze, we’re talking about using toothpaste containing activated charcoal to naturally whiten, polish, and detox your teeth. Scared to try it? Don't worry, we tried it for you.

When I came over to Mer’s this week for our experiment, we of course thought it would be best for us to drink a glass of cab before we tried this experiment (you know, so that our teeth were EXTRA stained. It was all for the sake of the experiment). The brand of toothpaste we tested was My Magic Mud. Our first thoughts were that despite appearance it actually tasted ok! Be warned, it turns your teeth straight black during brushing. Also, you will need to clean your sink.

AFTER PICTURE: SHINY WHITES

After snapping a few dazzling pictures, and managing to not drip black spit all over ourselves, correction myself, the result was a noticeably whiter smile (OK, may have been because of the wine stain, but we are convinced they looked whiter than before). The best part was how our teeth felt.  They had that smooth post-dentist-like feel.

My Magic Mud Products has one study shared on their website claiming their products remove stains considerably better than ADA reference material. Other articles have interviewed dentists who all say that while there may be better options for whitening, charcoal toothpaste is very effective in removing stains such as wine and coffee.

We wondered, are the ingredients safe? The creator of Magic Mud, Jessica Arman, formulated this product as a way to ease symptoms of her daughter’s medical condition which caused tooth sensitivity and cavities.  According to the My Magic Mud website, My Magic Mud® uses thermally activated charcoal derived from coconut shells to make sure that no unwanted chemicals ever come into contact with the products.

The ingredients list is short: it’s activated charcoal, coconut oil, organic essential oils, and  bentonite clay.  Bentonite Clay and other healing clays have been used by cultures throughout history for their nutrients and to help rid the body of toxins.

My Magic Mud® checks every certificate of analysis for clay sources before going to manufacture. They proudly claim that their products don’t contain peroxides or any harsh chemicals.

So, who is this product a good fit for?

  • Health nuts and clean freaks interested in purifying their mouth and gums.

  • People with teeth and gum sensitivity: My Magic Mud claims to reverse sensitivity and completely soothes your mouth.

  • Wine drinkers and coffee worshippers. My Magic Mud breaks down stains and pulls out toxins

  • Those that want whiter teeth, without sacrificing teeth sensitivity and your enamel.

  • People done with chemicals in toothpaste.

My Magic Mud offers toothpaste in 4 flavors: Wintergreen (which is the one we tested), Peppermint, Cinnamon Clove, and Spearmint. They also offer Whitening powder, to use at night before bed, and a polishing powder, to use after meals.
